Preceptor Award

Rationale:  The purpose of this award is to acknowledge an individual that has been chosen by their agency/company to  be a preceptor. This therapist demonstrates the unique qualities, high standards and clinical skills that are exemplary.  They are organized and able to teach processes and procedures to newly hired staff, molding them into confident and  talented home care clinicians.  

Criteria:  To be eligible for this award, the nominee must: 

1. Be a current member of the APTA Home Health Academy
2. Be nominated by a Home Health Academy member  
3. Be a preceptor with a minimum of one year experience in the home health setting  
4. Be an engaged member of their agency, participating in education initiatives and seeking knowledge that will  further their professional development  
5. Have documented excellence in clinical practice  
6. Have good time management and organizational skills  
7. Be flexible and able to quickly adjust to changing schedules or critical patient needs  
8. Understand regulatory requirements and teach best practices in clinical outcomes, OASIS data collection, patient  satisfaction and skilled documentation needed for each visit 

Nomination Process: Any current member of the APTA Home Health Academy may nominate a physical therapist or physical  therapist assistant who meets the award criteria. Nomination packets should include:  

1. One or more letters of nomination addressed to the APTA Home Health Academy describing how and why the  nominee meets the criteria. 

2. At least one letter of endorsement (support statement) should be included with the nominating letter and  address some, if not all, of the following: 

a. How long has this nominee been a preceptor to newly hired staff? Provide examples of their processes  and procedures for teaching.    
b. Describe the nominee's involvement in educational initiatives and their own professional development.  
c. How has this nominee demonstrated excellence in clinical practice? 
d. Give examples of how this nominee has shown flexibility and adaptability to changing schedules or critical patient needs. 
e. Provide information and examples of how this nominee understands regulatory requirements and  teaches best practices.  
f. Anything else you want to add to describe why this nominee should be recognized for their exemplary precepting and clinical skills?  

Selection Process:  The Nominating Committee will review nominations and the chair will present the Committee's recommendation to the APTA Home Health Academy Executive Committee for approval.  

Presentation:  The award will be presented following the Business Meeting during APTA Combined Sections Meeting, usually held in February of each year.  The Award will consist of a $50 gift certificate for the APTA Learning Center.
